Thorang-La (pass) - 5,416 m/17,764 ft

Waking up earliest in the morning and going over the Thorang-La cannot be matched with the rest of the high pass walks. As the morning sun hits the trail, you would be stunned to find yourself in the heavenly abode like place surrounded by majestic mountains. The views from the Thorong la pass is truly spectacular, spreads from the northwest Once Forbidden Kingdom of Mustang to the incredible mountain ranges of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri to the south.  Descend towards Kaligandiki valley from the pass is challenging but rewarding as we trek to the shrine of Muktinath enjoying and exploring the arid beauty of the Tibetan plateau. The journey continues southward valley to the world deepest gorge backdropped by sensational views of Mount Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri. Shortly we get to the charming town of Tatopani (Hot Water) with the natural hot spring. It is high time to give yourself a break and enjoy the natural hot spring pool to repose and relax your tired muscle.

The final highlight of this Annapurna Circuit trekking is a sunrise view of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna massif from the famous Ghorepani Poon Hill. The view is incomparable. From Poon Hill, you will be literally overlooking the World’s Deepest Gorge, Kali Gandaki – the valley that we just drove. The mountain vista includes Gurja Himal, Dhaulagiri range, Tukuche peak, Nilgiri, and Annapurna massif.

Annapurna Base Camp (4,130 m /13,459 ft)

Progressively, we fire up our second fragment of Annapurna Circuit and Annapurna Base Camp Trek. After the exploration hike to Poon Hill, we continue our trek to the aptly named Annapurna Sanctuary also known Annapurna Base Camp trek is the most intensely scenic trek in Nepal. The Annapurna range is a vast massif with several peaks, which lies between the Kali Gandaki, and Marsyandi river valley, forming a solid, mountain bastion. Within its span of 40 miles, it encompasses dozens of peaks that are higher than 7000m and numerous others over 6000m. As we trek to Annapurna base camp as rhododendron forests give way to bamboo groves, which in turn vanish into the high desert landscapes, people of Aryan stock give way to those of Mongoloid stock, and the dominant religion changes from Hinduism in the lower reaches to Buddhism higher up. Passing through the Machhapuchare and Annapurna base camp directly below the dramatic fishtail peak, our destination is the vast natural amphitheater of the Annapurna Sanctuary where we are ringed by glistening peaks.

Ngawal is a place where trekkers stay overnight after the Kang-La pass while doing Naar-Phu Trek. From Ngawal we descend all the way down to Braga and walk further to the luxurious town of Manang. As you walk don’t miss looking back for the amazing scenes. Since now we are heading over 3500 m, alpine juniper and alpine herbs replace lush woodland of pine and rhododendron. You pass small yak herders (shelters) before stopping at the pleasant but small settlement of Yak Kharka (Yak Pasture Land). As the name suggests, since generation this place has been used by the locals to graze their Yaks during monsoon. Today is another short day to ensure we arrive at the base of the Thorong pass felling well acclimatized. This 4-hour walk provides you with great trekking experience. You would very well realize the difference between being in the tree line area and into thin air. As we head towards the alpine, due to thin air some may find a little exhausted and experience heavy breathing. However, all these are very normal, yet we recommend everyone take it very slowly. On the way, you may have ample opportunity to witness the Blue Sheep into the wild or Himalayan Thar including the soaring peak of Chulu. You arrive at Phedi (4420 meters) in time for lunch, and you will have the afternoon free to relax and prepare for the crossing of the pass. Depending on the weather and your health conditions your group leader may organize a short excursion until the High Camp.

After Deurali, the valley broadens and there is a change in vegetation as the trail meanders across a fairly level section where Mt. Gangapurna (7485m) shows itself ahead, framed by the steep walls that form the gateway to the Sanctuary. A stream pours down from the left and is crossed by a bridge. Immediately in front raises a steep, vegetated bluff on top of which is settled a lodge. This is the first of the buildings of Machhapuchhare Base Camp (MBC) where we take a short break.

Next 2 hours walk from MBC we reach our final destination to Annapurna Base Camp. The trek to the Base Camp ascends at a steady gradient, never very steeply, but the altitude is likely to have a tiring effect. Do not hurry, but ascend slowly and enjoy the expanding panorama. It should be noted that this Base Camp was used by Chris Bonington's 1970 expedition. The panorama out here is nothing short of spectacular where you get a chance to have breakfast outside enjoying the view.

FAQs

Since the Annapurna circuit delivers different variations, the length of the trip entirely depends on which package people prefer to choose. However, as the whole Annapurna circuit is approximately 248 km / 154 miles in total length. The reason why it was considered as No. 1 trekking destination was simply because it goes through five different districts of Nepal namely – Lamjung, Manang, Mustang, Myagdi, and Kaski which all vary in terrain and topography.

Annapurna circuit trek is not a stroll in a park it is quite demanding. The highest elevation you would trek is 5416m / 17,769 feet which is Thorong La pass. Though a most admired trekking destination, the high altitude walking into the thin air does matter. However, the daily elevation advancement is very gradual which prepares ample time for acclimatization. Anyone with sound fitness can join the trek. Nevertheless, it is not appropriate for someone with very weak ankles, knee, heart, or lung problems - necessary check-up and consent from your doctor is a must.

if you choose a package flying from Jomsom then there few significant things you are to know. Jomsom happens to be the 'Windy Valley' of Nepal to which our air aviation is quite strict about flying small planes to these remote mountain airstrips. This means flying to or from this mountain airport is very safe. Further, there are flight delays and sometimes cancellation under various weather circumstances. However, this isn't an everyday story and there is an alternative of driving to and from Jomsom in-case of flight cancellation. Though driving may be earnestly long (9/10 hrs.) in comparison to flying yet the fun of driving through the world’s deepest gorge has a different charm.

We don’t normally deal distance in Km or Miles while trekking in any parts of Nepal rather we do it in hours. Typically, every day we walk around 6 / 9 hours excluding your multiple breaks and lunch. However, your pace makes a difference with the time you reach the destination. In fact, we are opposed to contending ourselves to get to the destination earlier than the recommended time. We rather take it really slow making your vacation more memorable and enjoyable than exhausting. The longest hours we hike would be the day we go over the Thorang-La Pass - can be from 9 to 13 hours depending on the trail condition which vastly varies with our without snow.

We use Family Oriented Lodges which are at its best offering you the comfort experience and its typical local environment. It’s basically the extension of their own houses that offers you a twin bed sharing room with common toilets. In a few places, the accommodation facility is pretty basic and sometimes the possibility of sharing rooms with others can be the occasion due to the shortage of rooms. However, as for many places, the facility is awesome. With the advancement in tourism, the tea-houses in these areas have evolved to earnestly convenient hotels.

However, the Himalayan Dynasty delivers professionals who are well equipped with medication and oxygen cylinders to deal with A.M.S. The charging privilege for your devices is possible in almost all lodges unless if occasionally they didn’t encounter any problem with their power supply or their Solar panels. However, it is always wise to carry some extra batteries or the fully charged power bank batteries since your batteries run out pretty quickly in the cold.

Almost all lodges provide you with a hot shower facility at a minimal cost. Whenever they have any malfunctioning with their heaters they do provide anyone with bucket – hot shower which is indeed a great experience in the Himalayas. WiFi facility too is almost everywhere in this trip over some charges but they are not always reliable as petty things always happen in the mountains.
